Silent Spring
Carson influenced the environmental movement by presenting a view of nature compromised by synthetic pesticides, especially DDT. These pesticides enter the biosphere, Carson argued, and make their way up the food chain to threaten bird and fish populations and eventually sicken children. Carson was the first to put already published data together for the general public and draw stark and far-reaching conclusions. In doing so, Carson, the citizen-scientist, spawned a revolution.
An Inconvenient Truth
2006 American documentary film about former United States Vice President Al Gore's campaign to educate people about global warming. Premiering at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival the documentary was a critical and commercial success, and An Inconvenient Truth has been credited for raising international public awareness of global warming and reenergizing the environmental movement.
